Sandboxie alternative for Windows: how Mezi Box works

Mezi Box is part of Mezi and needs no driver or extra install. It uses a feature of Windows itself: apps run at a low integrity level, and the system blocks writes outside the instance.

Step by step

  1. Download and install Mezi, then choose the folder where instances will live.
  2. In Mezi, click "Add app" and pick the program. Create the free account, which unlocks Mezi Box.
  3. Click "New instance" and give it a name, like "Work" or "Personal".
  4. When creating the instance, turn on Mezi Box and open the program. Clearing or deleting the instance removes everything it wrote.

The free plan opens 1 instance at a time, alongside your normal app. With Pro, you can open as many as you want at once.

Tip

The main difference: Sandboxie redirects what the app writes, and Mezi Box blocks it. That is simpler, but some apps that need to write outside their own folder may fail.

Does Mezi Box replace Sandboxie in every way?

Not yet. It is in beta and does not redirect writes or open a second copy of apps that only allow one. In return, it needs no driver and comes with Mezi.
